Description
The Mid-Texas Symphony presents four Children’s Concerts each year; two in Seguin and two in New Braunfels on the Monday immediately following the regular Sunday concert.
The concerts are free to all fourth and fifth grade students in the entire Comal and Guadalupe area. Since the inception of the Children’s Concerts in 1988 more than 100,000 children in rural South Central Texas have attended a professional symphony orchestra concert at no charge to the child, the parent or the school district.
The concerts are classic orchestral performances scaled down to 45-minutes in duration but never dumbed-down. The programming is vibrant, challenging, and informative. The students are given the opportunity to experience the compositions of classical composers like Mozart, Brahms, Beethoven, Bach, Strauss and Schubert performed by as many as 78 professional musicians.
Music teachers are sent CDs with programming selections and TEKS study guides to prepare students for an educational experience which is further enhanced by the Maestro’s engaging and entertaining “teaching” from the podium. Students learn about the dynamics of an orchestra; they are challenged to listen for themes, repeating patterns, and for specific instruments. Maestro David Mairs asks the students to pay close attention for a certain sound, or to close their eyes and image, and he encourages them to find a way to make music a part of their lives.
The Children’s Concerts are core to the mission of Mid-Texas Symphony.
